Sententia Discovery reduces the difficulty of discovering data on backup or archive tapes.Collecting electronically stored information (ESI) from backup tapes has traditionally been a time consuming and expensive process. The content archived on backup tapes is often valuable as a point-in-time snapshot of files and email.
However, this data is not typically leveraged as it has been expensive to identify and collect.
Sententia Discovery’s new cloud collection and review service for tapes solves this problem. This service combines the convenience and simplicity of the cloud with the efficiency and access powered by Index Engines and other technologies.

How does it work?
Backup tapes are delivered to Sententia Discovery’s tape processing facility where the tapes are indexed.
Our technology is used to index the tape content, de-duplicate and deNIST the data set (remove common files that are typically software code), then make a searchable index available online.
Once the index has been searched and the client has a detailed understanding of what the tapes contain Sententia Discovery offers two main options for content delivery.
These options are:
- Full extraction of the unique tape content or;
- Extraction of data culled for specific content or custodians (email users). Once the user identifies the specific relevant content (files, email, custodian mailboxes, etc.) it can be tagged using a simple web browser interface to mark the files required for extraction from tape.
The forensically sound extracted content is available for the user for review, over the web or copied onto media. No specialised hardware or software is required by the client or user.
The data is identified in the cloud, collected at Sententia Discovery, and delivered to you for processing.
Combining the cost effective Index Engines technology with the cloud allows this service to be delivered starting at $300 per tape. This is typically less than the cost of a simple file listing provided by traditional restoration vendors which does not give any access to the tape contents.
